How Counselling Helps
Counselling provides a unique space and time away from the people and situations you are currently encountering. The time we spend together each week is time you are giving to yourself, because in some way or for some reason, you very much need or want it.
People come to counselling for many different reasons; Sometimes because your current experience of yourself and the world is too difficult, anxiety provoking, or depressing; or perhaps you have a general dissatisfaction and want to understand more about the root of this. You might be feeling okay, but have unanswered questions which bother you and just will not let you be.
Together with me in counselling, you will find the support and space to connect to your thoughts, your feelings and your voice and to consider how you may wish to create a different way to be in yourself and in your relationships with the world.
Counselling can help you to:
How I Work - My Approach
I believe that health and growth is best facilitated in the context of a relationship. I offer my willingness to see, hear and accept you as you are, without preconception, expectation or judgement. I offer a safe, confidential space for us to explore together your current situation.
I believe we have all made many choices in life in times of difficulty or danger, which were the best way of coping in that moment. Sometimes these ways of coping become stuck and limit our ability to live full and happy lives connected to our own needs and desires, and to having fulfilling relationships with others. My approach is to raise your awareness of the ways in which you experience yourself and relate to others. This can then lead to you having the ability to choose better how to deal with each new situation in a way which is appropriate and satisfying in that particular moment.
My therapeutic work is grounded in Gestalt therapy which is a creative, holistic and humanistic approach supporting personal growth and self acceptance. I work with you as a whole person, paying attention to your thoughts, emotions and felt experience. I work relationally, meaning that I bring myself into the therapeutic relationship with you as another human being, sharing my responses, thoughts and feelings with you.
My approach and training support creative, experimental and at times playful engagement and we may use sound and movement if this seems useful and comfortable. With some clients a purely talking therapy is right for them and I will always adapt my way of working to each unique person and situation.

Other relevant experience
Personal Therapy as a Client
2010 to 2018 ongoing
I have received over 300 hours of personal therapy myself as a client and so have direct experience of the range of emotions which can accompany a therapeutic journey, as well as what can make this a meaningful experience.

2017 to 2019
I am currently undertaking a three year training to facilitate a Biodanza group (see below).
Therapeutic Dance & Movement Practice
2012 to 2018 ongoing
Biodanza is a system developed by a Chilean Psychologist in the 1960s with the aim of enabling an individual to reconnect to their natural aliveness, vitality, creativity and enjoyment of life. To allow a person to regain the ability to move away from what is harmful to them and towards what is positive. In order to do this one must come to know who they are and who they are not, what they feel and what they need and want. There is an emphasis on living each moment as fully as possible.
Participants do not talk during the sessions and express themselves through movement and by allowing their emotion to flow. Exercises are done individually, in pairs and in larger groups. It is a very individually intimate experience and at the same time there is a heartfelt connection to others in the group.
I have taken part in this group on a regular basis over the past five years.
